MRS. HEATHER SOLTIS IS A NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFIED TEACHER

The National Board of Professional Teaching Standards has announced the national certification of 23 teachers in Okaloosa schools this year. To achieve this certification these teachers went through a rigorous process of evaluating their teaching through examining their students’ work, analyzing their teaching through videotaped lessons, and evaluating their contributions in the community. In addition, they passed a computer-based test in their area.

Florida had the most teachers certified this year with 1,826. North Carolina followed with 1,453.  Florida now has 12,600 National Board certified teachers.  There are some 74,000 National Board certified teachers in the U.S.

John Spolski after the School Board meeting in Crestview
January 28th. The Board confirmed her nomination as
assistant principal of Bruner Middle School

"She has an extensive background in ESE [Exceptional Student Education] and a very balanced approach with the students -- she is firm yet compassionate," says Bruner Principal John Spolski of newly appointed Assistant Principal Merchelle Hixson-Wells. "I look forward to working with her. I think she is going to complement [Peter] Ulrich and myself."Hixson-Wells was confirmed by the School Board at the January 28th meeting in Crestview. She has been an ESE teacher at Bruner since 2002 and has extensive experience with counseling children and teens. She worked with at-risk and emotionally handicapped children for the Department of Children and Families, the Children's Home Society and Bridgeway before coming to Bruner."I enjoy helping kids," says Hixson-Wells. "I try to support kids in whatever area they're working on. Seeing them succeed is a wonderful thing."Hixson-Wells was promoted to assistant principal following Don Crowder's recent retirement. "I learned a lot working with him," she says. "He truly cared about each and every one of the kids. I hope to do as good a job as he did."Hixson-Wells graduated from the University of Georgia with a BA in Political Science. After completing a tour of duty with the US Navy, she earned her Master's degree in Counseling from Troy University. At Bruner, she was the Professional Development representative and helped write the School Improvement Plan. She was also an assistant coach of the girls' track team and a tutor for struggling students. She developed the curriculum and taught at the first STOMP (Striving to Optimize My Potential) Summer Bridge program, which was designed to boost the academic achievement of middle school students and prepare them for advanced coursework.

Her community involvement has included coaching a YMCA basketball team, teaching Sunday school and playing the piano at her church and assisting backstage at the Northwest Florida Ballet.
